Secular Badges
Secular badges were popular in the medieval period as either lover’s tokens or livery badges. All of the badges below are accurate copies of surviving pewter artefacts. For information on the history of secular badges please refer to the ‘History’ section of the website.
S4-Lovers token
This attractive badge depicts what appears to be a medieval Foget-me-not, (the modern Water Forget-me-not). This plant was credited with the property that those who wore it would never be forgotten by their lovers. This type of badge would have been given as a symbol of true love.
